It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on the 9th of April 2021.
His Royal Highness passed away peacefully in the morning at Windsor Castle. The Nuclear Community Charity Fund wish to extend our sincere condolences to Her Majesty The Queen and members of the royal family.
Prince Phillip shares part of our nuclear test heritage aside from his military service. The Duke of Edinburgh arrived on Christmas Island in April 1959 where he was met by members of the Operation Grapple Task Force, staff from the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston, and Gilbertese residents.
The Duke inspected members of the local police force, and met a group of schoolchildren with their teacher. The Duke visited the Grapple Headquarters and Joint Operations Centre and then inspected the crews of several Hastings transport aircraft. He was flown by helicopter over the test area. On returning to the headquarters, the Duke visited the local church built out of pieces of coral and toured a mess area before departing by helicopter.
